IJF Referee Seminar and Exams in Dakar, Senegal: A Commitment to Excellence and Fair Play

The International Judo Federation (IJF) Referee Seminar commenced in Dakar, Senegal, on 19 November 2024, marking a significant milestone in the development of refereeing excellence within the African and global judo community. Hosted by the Senegalese Judo Federation under the leadership of its President, Mr Ababacar Ngom, the seminar has brought together distinguished participants and experts, highlighting the continent’s dedication to judo’s core values of integrity, fairness, and respect.

A Distinguished Gathering

The seminar’s opening ceremony was attended by key figures, including Ms Estony Pridgeon, Secretary General of the African Judo Union (AJU); Mr Cheikh Tahirou Fall, Director of High-Level Sports representing Senegal’s Ministry of Sports; Mr Alain Kingue, AJU Chief Sports Director; Mr Faissal Raguib, AJU Director of Education and Coaching; and Mr Youssoufou Abdourahmane, AJU Sports Director.

Ms Pridgeon extended a warm welcome on behalf of AJU President Mr Siteny Randrianasolonianiko, expressing deep gratitude to the IJF Referee Commission’s experts, Mr Jeon Ki Young and Mr Pasquale Tonino. She commended their invaluable expertise and commitment to advancing excellence in refereeing, a cornerstone of fair play in judo. Ms Pridgeon also acknowledged the exceptional contributions of the Senegalese Judo Federation in hosting this significant event, stressing the importance of collaboration in promoting judo’s growth.

Mr Cheikh Tahirou Fall echoed this sentiment, thanking the IJF and AJU for entrusting Senegal with the honour of hosting such an important event. He also highlighted the critical role these organisations play in fostering the growth of judo across Africa.

Continental and International Referee Exams

In addition to the seminar, the IJF will also conduct Continental and International Referee Exams during this period. The presence of the IJF team underscores the significance of this event in shaping the future of refereeing.The seminar and exams have drawn 64 participants, including 38 referees from Africa and other continents.

These referees are undergoing intensive assessments to obtain their Continental or International licences.The seminar features theoretical sessions and interviews, while the practical examinations will take place during the African Cadets and Juniors Cup on 21 and 22 November. It is led by IJF Referee Director Mr Jeon Ki Young, assisted by IJF Referee Commission Member Mr Pasquale Tonino Chyurlia, in collaboration with AJU Referee Director General Mr Ababacar Ngom and AJU Referee Director Mr Khled Anwar.
