Results Day 2: 29th African Senior Championships, Tunis 2018

Second day of competition at Palais des Sports d'El Menzah. Five categories appeared on the program of the day. After attending tremendous fights yesterday in (-70/-78/+78) Women and (-90/-100/+100). Men, today's program also reserved his lot of surprise. This second day of competition was also marked by great moment very strong in emotion. The spirit of sport has won and already in the playoffs, the tone was set and we have witnessed to very high level fights in -73KG which registered 24 players. In the categories -66kg/-81kg/-57Kg/-81Kg also, all the athletes took their chances to give the best of themselves. The show was on with all those players who were fighting to get the best result to appear in the final block.

The task was very difficult for the last year African champions to keep their title. Everybody were fighting for a place in the final block.

-57kg: Moroccan youngster makes senior breakthrough

Rome European Open silver medallist Soumiya IRAOUI (MAR) won the first senior gold medal of her career with victory in the -57kg category in Tunis.

IRAOUI, 22, showed her promise when she won the Junior African Championships in 2015 and after gaining some international experience this year has now recorded the biggest win of her career.

The Moroccan judoka, who beat four-time Grand Slam medallist Jovana ROGIC (SRB) at home at Agadir Grand Prix in March, ruled her continent on Friday by winning all three of contests. IRAOUI bested Yamina HALATA (ALG) by a waza-ari in her toughest contest before storming past Nesria JLASSI (TUN) and Lamiaa ALZENAN (EGY) by ippon.

-63kg: BJAOUI recaptures African title after 2017 silver, 2016 gold

Meriem BJAOUI (TUN) made it two titles out of two for the Tunisia's women on day two as she reclaimed African Championships gold.

The 21-year-old had won the Junior African Championships in 2016, senior gold a year later, silver in 2017 and now gold again in 2018.

World number 44 BJAOUI defeated Matinigue FOFANA (BUR), Fatou Kine BADJI (SEN) and Sofia BELATTAR (MAR) all by ippon.

The win moved hosts Tunisia level in the gold medal stakes with Algeria and Egypt on three gold medals.

-66kg: Egyptian elation for ABDELMAWGOUD

Mohamed ABDELMAWGOUD (EGY) won his second African Championships gold medal with a perfect day in the -66kg category. The former Oberwart European Open runner-up won all four of his contests by ippon to claim Egypt's third medal in this year's competition.

ABDELMAWGOUD, 23, who failed to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympics, defeated Houssem KHALFAOUI (TUN), Siyabulela MABULU (RSA), Houd ZOURDANI (ALG) and teammate ABELRAHMAN Ahmed (EGY) without conceding a single score.

In consecutive contests to strike gold and now has the platform to launch his long-term bid for a place at the Olympics with domestic competitions being crucial to his chances.

-73kg: Algeria's NOURINE wins first continental crown

Two-time African Championships bronze medallist Fethi NOURINE (ALG) struck African Championships gold for the first time on Friday as he charged to -73kg gold.

The 26-year-old, who fought in Paris earlier this year, won all four of his contests by the maximum score. NOURINE defeated Med Aziz GHAZOUANI (TUN), Joseph HELL BAPOU (CMR), Ahmed EL MEZIATI (MAR) and MOHYELDIN Mohamed (EGY) all by ippon.

-81kg: Former World Masters medallist ABDELAAL completes continental treble

Mohamed ABDELAAL (EGY) won the African Championships for the third time with a magical display at -81kg.

ABDELAAL, who also holds an African Games gold medal, is one of Egypt's top judoka having earned success on the international stage.

The 27-year-old qualified for Rio 2016 and won his opening contest against now world number six OTGONBAATAR Uuganbaatar (MGL) before losing to eventual Olympic champion Khasan KHALMURZAEV (RUS) by a waza-ari.

ABDELAAL won a stunning bronze at the invite-only IJF World Judo Masters in 2016, his only IJF World Judo Tour medal, and has now underscored his continental supremacy.

Egypt's medal rush continued with ABDELAAL beating Nandjo Yoann Wilfied YAPI (CIV), Willy Marvel NGOUOZEU MOYO (CMR), Saliou NDIAYE (SEN), Achraf MOUTII (MAR) to win gold with a perfect record of four ippons from four contests.
