AFRICAN JUDO UNION - Interview with the Newly Elected President of Congo, Mr. Francis ATA
19. Jan 2025
What are your impressions of the Casablanca Open after more than three years of absence from the continental and global circuit?
I am very impressed by the excellent organization of this continental competition. It meets international standards. We did not notice a large delegation from Congo present at the event. Indeed, we were only able to have one athlete participate in the -90 kg category. Initially, we had registered a large number of athletes in the cadet, junior, and senior categories. However, due to unexpected last-minute financial issues, we had to cancel the participation of most of our team.
Your election as president of the federation on September 28, 2024, marked the end of a prolonged crisis that hindered the development of Congolese judo. What measures are you taking to revive judo in your country?
We are working with our Executive Committee on new strategies to get our discipline back on track and make it flourish among young people. We are relying heavily on the International Judo Federation and the African Judo Union to support our programs and assist us in our efforts.
You attended the AJU Ordinary and Elective Congress. What is your opinion?
I was delighted to attend the AJU Congress after a long absence. It was fulfilling to reconnect with the large African judo family. I was impressed by the level of organization at the Congress. The AJU has made a qualitative leap forward. I am proud to be part of this family, which places the development of judo at the heart of its concerns and priorities.
